Can anybody tell me why Canadian coins keep ending up in my piggy bank?
I live on the western coast of the state of Michigan, it’s so annoying when the bank teller hands me back candain coins-knowing that I can’t use them. Can someone tell me why canadian coins end up in the money supply.

Now that the currencies are near par, I’m surprised that Michigan retailers aren’t accepting Canadian money. And also surprised that you get a large number of Canadian coins *now* of all times. Wouldn’t have surprised me if retailers tried to sneak a few Canadian coins into your change when they were worth less than American ones, but nowadays…
…or maybe that’s just it. Are you sure that retailers aren’t accepting Canadian coins? That would explain how they’re ending up with larger amounts of Canadian money, and thus how they’re landing in your change.
On the other side of the border, it used to be reasonably common, when the Canadian dollar was worth 70 American cents, to find an American penny or two in your change, but it was a pleasant surprised when you got an American nickel, dime, or even quarter! But these days, I get a much larger amount of American money in my change (and I’m thinking about refusing it, because I’m not certain how much longer Canadian retailers will accept American change at par). My assumption is that customers are more willing to pay (and retailers are more willing to make change) in American money nowadays than they would have in the past.
Edit to add: Your $1.75 CAD would, at the moment, work out to about $1.77 USD.
Maybe it is because Michigan is close to the Canadian border, you get allot of Canadians that cross border shop. There is not that much difference in shape, size and weight between the two coins, so you have to carefully check them to see this difference. We get lots of American coins with our change when we buy somthing here.
I have gotten rolls of quarters from the bank that have 4 or 5 American quarters in it.
There are a lot of Canadians that travel within the US and a lot of Americans travel in Canada, the coins are so similar they just naturally get mixed. I’m from the Detroit area and Canadian dimes, nickels, and pennies were all over the place. In states that border Mexico, some business owners let customers use Mexican money instead of American. I am sure business owners along the Canadian border do the same.
I service a water vending machine and people have tried using coins from all over the world. People- pay attention!
lol…well yeah. maybe it is because of the tips and stuff. LOL! mine is WORSE!!! i live in the Philippines and i have had numerous situations where the cashiers give me coins from the US! 5 cents and stuff! LOL! i would notice them if i start recounting my change! i kept them all… its kinda annoying sometimes cuz i cant ask the foreign exchange poeple to convert my American money cuz its only a few but if you convert it to pesos, its a lot! grrrrr….so annoying.
Next time you get change back, refuse the Canadian coins.
Well you see…. I sleep walk at night and drop them in your piggy bank…..(lol)
I would check my monies at the bank if I were you ….. and if they hand you the Canadian crap let them know right away and don’t accept it…. ask for the bank president!! ( I have done this at my own bank here in Wisconsin)
save them, they are worth more than US ones.
Because few people check…they look similar. Check when you go to the bank & hand them back to them…or save them up & take a trip across the border!
Because you do not put them in charity piggy bank.
Canada is close to the US. It is real close to MI.
I usually just leave them as a tip.
