Does anyone know if the Canadian nickel was ever dyed/coated with copper? Which years?
I have a 1986 Canadian nickel which is dyed/coated with copper instead of nickel, tin, or zinc. Is it an error or just a special minted coin for circulation?

The 1986 canadian 5 cent coin is actually made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. This mixture gives the coin a silver color not a copper one. I would say that your coin has environmental damage of some type. US nickels have the same composition. Nickel that have been in water for a time tend to turn brown, also some chemicals will do that. The only other thing is, it could be a nickel on a cent planchet but that means the nickel is smaller. I find no listings of experimental nickels of that date. It could also have been a copper plating science project. Best I can do here.
