If you live in the United States, save Canadian coins?
Ever since I could remember, Canadian coins do not count when spending. If you give a clerk a Canadian quarter and they catch you they may refuse it. However not a day goes by that I didn’t receive at least one Canadian coin. I decided to save them for a trip to Canada, since these coins are hard to spend. Is this a good idea?
Thanks Aaron, I do not know why either.
How about your vending machines?

Today, most stores do not take Canadian coins just because it has a lesser value. However, we take American coins, so I am really puzzled as to why most American retailers don’t take Canadian coins. That is a good question, I heard from somebody the pop machines do take Canadian coins I presume. However, most retailers take Canadian pennies though, lol.
An answer for Aaron - Canadian quarters are not worth as much as US quarters, that’s why you can’t spend them in US. You can however use US quarters in Canada. Banks don’t like handling foreign coins.
Yes keep your Canadian coins for next time you visit! Always handy for putting in vending machines etc.(hey, maybe they fit US vending machines…)(but that would be dishonest).
Well, if you can’t spend them, you might as well hang on to them until you go to Canada. Though I’ve been hoarding US coins I find in my change for quite a while now and keep forgetting to bring them with me when I visit the US.
it would take along time to save up alot of money. it would be easier to exchange us money for can money.
Dont know why you cant spend them, you cab spend us money in canada.
I dont understand why you would do that. The US dollar is worth more than the Canadian dollar, so you would get more for your money by exchanging it.
If you have any banks near where you live you can exchange them for American money and then spend it! That’s if you have any banks that haven’t gone broke yet.
Well here it doesn’t matter if the coins are american or Canadian, we just don’t use your bills or one dollar coin cause admit it our loonie is better than your one dollar coin. And here you can use both american & Canadian coins in vending machines.
There is an agreement between Canada and the US that SMALL amounts of coinage are accepted at par. Therefore if you get one or two Canadian coins in your change you should be able to spend them in SMALL amounts. If you want to press the point with a merchant the next time you get a Canadian coin in your change just pass it back and say "no thanks I want an American coin". It is just businesses that are refusing to take it after all a nickel is a nickel.
I save a few coins as souvenirs from any destination, but rarely attempt to save enough for a return trip.
I agree that using a bank at the time of an actual trip is probably easier.
