is the royal mint counterfeiting?
I can no longer check coins to see if they are counterfeited, to many different designs on each coin.

You can check the coin if you have another coin with you as the forged coin has not got the density of metal as the genuine coin and if you drop them both they will sound completely different. It is too expensive to counterfeit coins and so the forgers do not really go for the coins. However, there are a lot of paper ones about and although if you work in a bank for example you can spot the forges but they are getting better
