Should we bring Canadian or American $ to Jamaica?
We are travelling to Ocho Rios Jamaica in a few weeks and want to know what type of currency is best to bring? American or Canadian? (We are Canadian).
Also will our appliances work in Jamaica without an electrical converter?

Canadian money is accepted at nearly ALL (legally operating) cambios in Jamaica, but many street vendors are not as up to date with the Canadian exchange rate.
US currency is best. It holds the greatest value if you run out of J$ on the street and need to pay with foreign currency.
When you get to jamaica, convert some of your foreign currency to JM$ at the nearest Cambio. Don’t do it at the airport. They won’t give you a very good rate.
As far as appliances: if you use the same type as the USA, you should not need a converter.
only jamaican money
which one will give you the highest exchange rate? i live in america and bring u.s dollars then convert them in the ‘street’ for higher conversation rate.
my appliances work there i sent my sister a microwave and a tv it works. so does my blow dryer, portable dvd player etc. but maybe you should bring a converter just in case.
You can spend American $ in Jamaica, but you are better off going to a cambio (not the one at the airport) and exchanging your money for J$. When you pay for something in A$, you will get change in J$, and it’s not always the right amount of change.
And no, you won’t need an electrical converter.
Of course the rates of exchange on ALL money changes weekly, so bring both…you can’t go wrong that way….but US dollars are more widely known & accepted.
The airport & banks give really bad exchange rates….wait until your in Ocho Rios to exchange your money. There are 4-5 cambios to choose from there, but the one that has the BEST rate is near the clock ( every town has a town centre with a tall clock in its heart ) …go to the clock, look across from Rexal Plaza where Mothers ( fast food ) is located, you’ll see a fabric store…next door is a small market..go inside to the glass window & exchange there…they’re normally 2-3 dollars higher which makes a big difference on a large sum.
Both are accepted, the current rate is $1 Canadian is worth about $76.50 JA or $1 US is worth about $89 JA. I don’t even bother to exchange any money. There are so many Canadians and Americans that go to Jamaica that both currencies are widely used. In the shops most things are marked in US dollars. Everybody has a calculator!
You will get more from America $.
Bring American money but try to convert what youll need at a cambio (not at the airport). If you run out of jamaican dollars before you can get to exchange it, you can still use the america dollars but it’s not a good idea to use it for large purchases bc you might not get the right change and it’s a hassle to sit there and try to convert it when making a purchase.
you can bring both Canadian and us but u.s values more i think it 89 Jamaican dollar to 1 us dollar and about 75jam to 1 Canadian if u r going to buy from vendors on yhr street u will probably have to convert it to Jamaican currency. when u r in Jamaica u should go to reggae sunfest the show on earth there will be international night with artist from the us and dancehall night with the biggest dancehall artist today. it a go sell off that mean it will be great.
ur appliances will work just fine
