Why does Canada ask for a US social security number, and try to pull a criminal background check in Halifax?
I was asked to step over to the wooden booths, and wait to be questioned (okay or so I thought). I was traveling from the UK to the US, as I have done so through Canada 3 times already without this sort of hassle. The officer also made reference to a credit reporting service, and asked if I had 5 for a rehabilitation if I needed it, stating some crimes in the US go back 10 years for purposes of connecting flights in Canada. I doubt highly that I will ever support Canada’s economy again, or even currency trade with them. I ended up with my visa "canceled without prejudice" stamped across the Canadian Stamp. I phoned 3 US embassies, and 2 consulates, and CBSA, and the Toronto Airport Authority. After 6 hours and not really getting any answers, here I am. Problem publicised.

You see it is this way. The US puts big pressure on Canada because of the perception of loose screening processes. Every little incident in the USA and unproven accusations blaming Canada start flying all over the US media. THEN when we tighten up screening even more Americans are surprised when their criminals can’t enter the country?? Thank you for posting the question - it will show other Americans we are doing our bit.
You obviously have a criminal record. And guess what, the paperwork to clear it up and prove you are worthy will cost you money.
* It seems they are screening out criminals (such as those once convicted of DUI) and inviting them to leave, but offering them temporary absolution for cash. Seems rather seedy to me.
Be aware that any country may apply any restrictions or regulations to any foreigner entering that country. That includes Canada, the US and the UK.
You are correct in exercising your right not to come to Canada again.
I agree with Juan.
If Americans think that our customs officials are lax they complain. If Americans think our customs procedures are too tight they complain.
You can’t have it both ways. Sorry.
If you have a criminal record then customs has a right to say you can’t stay here. There are procedures to go through in order to get into Canada with a previous criminal record and yes it costs $.
Your customs officials do the same thing to folks from Canada so don’t worry about it.
Being one of the oldest ports of entry the agents there are probably more tightly run than other cities.
Were you an American coming from U.k. returning home through Canada?
That would send up their radar as why wouldn’t you fly direct into the U.S. from the U.K.?
Were you stuck in Halifax?
It sucks going through customs these days, even as a Canadian coming back into Canada from the U.S. I have been hassled by Canadian customs-sometimes I think they just power trip!
I am sorry for your pain. We here in the US will be emerging from our collective brain cramp in a few more months. I can tell you that the last time I was in Canada(1993), the US side was a B***h to cross, and I thought they were on our side!!!
