1) Steven has 9 gold coins that are identical in appearance. However, one coin is counterfeit and weighs slighlt less than the others. Using a balance scale, how can he find the counterfeit coin in just two weighings?

1.) Split the coins into three separate groups: A, B, C.
Weigh groups A & B - If group A or B is lighter the counterfeit coin is in there. You would then take the group that is lighter and split them into 3 groups: 1, 2, 3. You would weigh two of these groups. The lighter one is the counterfeit one, if they are the same weight then the third coin that you didn’t weigh is the lighter one.
If Groups A & B are the same weight then Group C has the counterfeit coin. Split the coins into 3 separate groups: 1, 2, 3. Weigh two of the coins. The lighter one is the counterfeit coin, if they are the same weight then the coin 3 which you didn’t weigh is the counterfeit coin.
