Canadian’s Quest for Gold, Postponed By Bidz Dela Cruz

Last October 23, The Ontario Track and Field Association (OTFA) announced that it will be using the Cycle Two funding instead of the Cycle One in the Quest for Gold program. This means that there will be a postponement in the announcement of Canadian track and field nominees and the payments of the chosen athletes.

The OTFA is sorry for the bothersomeness this will cause. The OTFA prepared a roster of nominees to the Ministry of Health Promotion on deadline, but some of the nominees have conflicts regarding the National carding. Based on the posted Ministry guidelines, athletes who were Nationally carded last year but who will not receive National cards this year will not be eligible for Quest for Gold carding. The OTFA is firm in its assertion, however, that some of these athletes remain outstanding candidates for funding. It is in this good faith that the OTFA’s Quest for Gold Selection Committee will appeal on behalf of the athletes affected by this rule, but have to wait until the list of Nationally carded athletes is revealed, and this list won’t be prepared for a number of weeks. The shift to Cycle Two does not mean lesser funding, it only translates to the postponement of funding. The OTFA is trying to be fair to their athletes, not cause misunderstanding. The programs in funding will be exactly the same for Cycle Two athletes as for Cycle One athletes. Also, the shift to Cycle Two is directed only to the review of nominees, the appeals process and the funding timelines. All Cycle One deadlines that have already passed will continue to be acknowledged. That means that, since the applications process has already been accomplished, no new athletes can apply at this point. Moreover, athletes who have already applied for Quest for Gold do not need to apply again.Below are the timelines of the New (Cycle Two):• January 19, 2009 Deadline for publication of Nominations List • February 2, 2009 Ontario Card appeal deadline • February 25, 2009 Final review of Nominations List
