I think most stores in border states exchange the Canadian dollar at par…so instead of exchanging them, just buy something with them.

You could take them to your local bank, or if you find them at all interesting, research the coins on the net. If the coins are quite old you may want to count them out at face value, then offer to sell them to a coin dealer at some percentage over face value. That way you could realize a small premium.
