Finding the Right Coin Dealer for yourself
Although there are many coin dealers around from whom you can buy your coins, what you ideally want is to strike up a long term relationship with a coin dealer whom you like and trust. To that end finding the right coin dealer for you can be difficult especially if you’re fairly new to the field yourself. I say that not for any other reason than because as a newbie you might be hesitant and feel that whatever coin dealer you’re talking to has more knowledge and experience than you do, and therefore you might mistakenly feel inferior, don’t.
Just because you’re new to coin collecting and don’t know the lingo, doesn’t mean that the coin dealer who can spout off all sorts of technical terms is any better than you are. It’s very easy to learn words, it’s harder to “learn†experience. Besides which that same coin dealer might be as new to the field as you and have only a marginal amount of knowledge under his belt. So don’t be intimidated by what you might perceive as experience.
Go shopping for a good coin dealer just as much as you would go shopping for a good deal. You don’t need to settle for anything less than a really good coin dealer who’s experienced and who knows his way around coins. What you shouldn’t do however, is to keep fifty different coin dealer waiting on you and give them all your wish list of coins in the hopes that at least one of them will find what you want and get a good bargain for you.
That just doesn’t happen. Just as you need to know that your coin dealer is going to give his all to you, the coin dealer also has to have some sort of loyalty from you to become his number one customer.
You won’t need to buy only expensive and rare coins (although that does help!), but it’s always better for you if you can get most of your coins through them. This will ensure that they also have incentive to serve you properly.
Coin buying is a two-way street and both parties need to get something out of it to be a mutually satisfying relationship. I’m not saying that you need to go and live in the coin dealer’s pocket, but it does help if your coin dealer gets loyalty from you and you get a dedicated coin dealer from the whole thing.
That said, don’t just walk into the first coin dealer you come across and expect to be able to forge a good relationship then and there. That takes time and more importantly, a coin dealer who’s willing to give at least five minutes of his time to listen to what you have to say.
