I have heard that if you trade coins in at a bank from or to canadian or american currency, you just get the same amount of currency back, no exchange rate, is this true?

When entering Canada, how does one go about exchanging US currency for Canadian?
ENTRY will be by car at a border crossing.

Excluding uncommon pieces like silver dollars, 50 cent pieces (both of which I’m not sure of for Canadian currency) their money mimics ours.
I can’t imagine that completely by chance they also chose to use 1, 5, 10, and 25 cent pieces each with the same size, thickness, and color as American currency.

Im thinking of having my savings exchanged into american currency and holding onto it untill the dollar regains it value. Then when the dollar is strong again transfer it back in to Canadian dollars. Any opinions on weather this would be a wise tax free investment
