American Nickles?
Hi, I’m a Canadian coin collector and I’m wondering if anyone could tell me if the nickle I have is a misprint. It has a picture of george washington on it aswell as a picture of a bison on the opposite side. It is a 2005 coin. The thing I’m wondering is whether the face of Washington and the bison are supposed to be align or not? For example when I have Washington’s head properly align and flip the coin over the bison is upside down. The coins im used to are always lined up on both sides. appreciate the help!

Well, the American nickel has a picture of Thomas Jefferson on it. In 2005 there were two specialty nickels released, one with a buffalo on the back, the other with a scene of the Pacific Ocean. If you flip them over (top to bottom) the images well be right-side up on both sides. But if you flip them side-to-side, one side will be upside down. So no, they are not alligned on both sides. And your nickel is not a misprint. Hope that clears it up for you!
You have one of the Western Journey nickels that commemorate the Louisiana purchase back in 1804. The program was a 2004 and 2005 thing. The one with the buffalo which is actually a bison represents the western part of the journey to survey all the lands.448,320,000 were minted at the Philadelphia mint and 487,680,000 were minted at the Denver mint and proofs were minted at the San Francisco mint 3,273,000. Coins minted in the U.S. plus other countries are minted in what is called coin rotation. If you take the coin and turn it over from bottom towards top the reverse is right side up. Coin from Canada and some of the Commonwealth nations as well as the UK, have their coins minted in medal rotation, that is you turn the coin from left to right not bottom to top. Medals which include military or the art kind are like your coins in Canada. Hope this answers your question and I collect Canadian tokens from before the Confederation, ones from the early 1800′s to 1850′s as well as U.S. and ancients.
