In super mario kart (SNES)?
What is the picture of the kart on the top half of the screen for? And also, whats the point of collecting coins while you race?

I assume that you’re talking about playing solo, but that’s how you say yourself in the first person playing the race.
The coins, are actually helpful in two ways: 1) The more coins you get, the faster you go. 2) If you were bumped by another player and you had no coins, you will always spin out. Having coins in your possession will avoid this problem when a lot of bumping is involved.
