Is it illegal to melt down Canadian coins that were obtained in the U.S?
I know it is illegal to melt down US coins in the US, and it is illegal to melt down Canadian coins in Canada. But what about coins that have traveled from Canada into the US. Can those coins obtained by US citizens , though not transported by the US citizens whom obtain them, be melted down for their metals?

ALl currency is the property of the Canadian federal government and it is indeed a felony to destroy any property of the Canadian government. It does no matter that the destruction occured outside of Canada, it is still the governments goods you are destroying.
It isn’t against US law to melt foreign coins in the US.
Though unless it is an old coin in bad condition it is worth more as a coin than as metal.
U.S. law states that it is Illegal if the foreign coin is, by law, made current. One could argue whether Canadian law counts as law when residing in the U.S. in reference to this phrase. Here’s the site I’m referencing:
