What currency should I bring on my trip to Egypt?
I’m Canadian, and I’m going on a school trip to Egypt. My teacher told me to bring American money, but I feel that I will get disrespected and ripped off if I go around with American money since Americans have a bad reputation in the Middle-East. She also told me that it is not preferable to bring Egyptian pounds.
So, what currency should I bring to Egypt?
You guys forgot that this is a SCHOOL trip, which means that I can’t go to a bank and I’m too young to have a credit card.

I’m an American living in Egypt . Your teacher is a bit off. It is easier and better for you to pay in the Egyptian pound. Paying in American dollars may get you ripped off but not because of our reputation in Egypt but rather because people see the American dollar and assume you are rich plus their conversion will be way off.
Even though you are a student, when you are at the airport arriving in Egypt, there are currency exchanges right there that can change your money for you.
Enjoy your trip
US dollars , you can change them to Egyptian pounds here if you wanted to buy something with local currency
bring us money and at the airport they will have someone who does the money exchange there. plz pick as best answer
Salam!
This is what I learnt after returning from Egypt.
1) It is ‘cheaper’ to use LE (egytian pound) then USD as ‘they’ earn more if u pay via USD. So get your USD changed before gng to egypt. Plus, in any country, it is best to use local currency (cheaper)
2) Using cc (credit card) is better, as I get better rates. Eg. money changer in my country 0.8MYR = 1LE but CC is 0.6MYR = 1 LE. So bank rates (CC) is much better. I shld have splurged on my cc more.
3) On no 2) above, be sure to ask if they charge (or not) the 3% ‘service charge’ which is rediculous. If they did not mentioned, politely decline to use cc if you have d cash as I think its not worth it. But most BIG est. would not charge that 3%. This is just to serve as a reminder. Coz it happened to me. And i politely say no i dont want to buy bcoz I was not told of this condition earlier and they ‘waived’ the 3%. Weird..
4) Change smaller domination (less 100LE but more 50s, 20s, 10s) if possible coz I had to run around looking for change. :S
Hope that helps!
Any currency works in Egypt. You could change it at a bank.
You can bring any currency you want and exchange it in Egypt. Good luck!
