Why wont americans accept the canadian dollar?
I am really puzzled as to why us Canadians will accept the US Dollar at any of our stores and bank yet when you go to the U.S they will not accept any Canadian money from us. My husband is a truck driver and travels to the USA all the time and has on occasion only Canadian funds available on him and has tried to have it converted at a bank in the U.S and was refused because they WONT accept the Canadian Dollar? He has gone to buy a coffee and was short 15 cents and went to pay that in canadian coins .5c and .10c and they would not accept it, Come on that is just ridiculous, if Canada is willing to accept the USD then Americans should be willing to do the same. If it is a rate difference then charge the few extra cents, but to totally refuse is unbelievable.
I dont see why Canada so freely accepts the U S Dollar yet the U.S wont do the same for Canada.
And for a bank to refuse to convert a 20.00 $ CAD to USD is just outrageous.

He tried to pay 15c American with 15c Canadian? Does he realize the two are not equal? It’s really not unbelievable, it’s not our currency. It’s unbelievable that he actually thought that would be okay. What the heck can an American do with 15c Canadian. Is that a joke? I’m pretty sure even if many Canadian merchants accept the American dollar (and that is a merchant thing, not a government thing), they probably don’t accept coins.
We don’t have enough Canadians or people with Canadian money for it to be worth it for our banks to have it freely available for conversion, or for our stores to accept it. The demand just isn’t here for the Canadian dollar, sorry.
the American dollar is more influential, apparently.
I know even when our dollars were at par and I went to go shop in the states they wouldn’t accept it…
It breaks the coke machine.
The Candian dolalr is w orth about 65 cents here in America. Always less.
My guess would be that any person would be happy to accept more money, but in america a canadain dollar is worth less, so they wouldnt want to get ripped off. Of course, if everyone accepted it in america it would be pretty much the same anyway, just not enough people realize it. Thats just my opinion. Oh, and can you rate me best answer cuz i wanna get to the level where you can vote on answers and stuff… kthxbai
Well, back when I was a kid the Can/US currency had the same value, so it was no big deal-you could use a Canadian dime like an American one. I think that all stopped, though, when the currencies no longer had the same value. And when you start getting into different values and having to make exchanges, it costs businesses fees. For the record, only certain banks in the US actually are set up to convert foreign currencies. I had to drive all over Dallas looking for a single bank that would cash my friend’s British pounds. So maybe that bank was not set up for currency conversion? (I know, it’s ridiculous…I didn’t make the rules)
They do in the Washinton state area.
I generally do not have a problem with this when change is involved.I often get Canadian coins as change back after a purchase but I live pretty close to the Detroit/Windsor crossing. Its never bills though,American stores will not take bills.I think that its because the rate changes almost daily and its to hard to keep staff and such up to speed, there’s a large margin of error that could emerge and the store could potentially lose of money. If the Canadian dollar were worth more than the American dollar then I’m sure that stores wouldn’t have a problem taking your husbands money.I think that your husbands employer should give him a debit card to purchase coffee and snacks when he has to cross the border.
